Postcard Party

Action is the antidote to despair,” a quote by Joan Baez posted on the instagram page of Women Building Peace, a cross-partisan organization based in Virginia, committed to bringing our voices center stage, during a time in The United States when it is difficult to feel heard. The group has launched a “Pen your Power” campaign- an effort to deliver thousands of handwritten notes to Congress men and women in Washington, DC. The campaign is grassroots and relatively simple: request up to 50 free postcards, write messages within the themes of ‘due process, human dignity, checks and balances, and freedom of speech,’ and ship the cards back to the organization who will personally deliver them to the specified representative. Their goal? Inspire hope, resilience, and cooperation.

While one person, in theory, could tackle all 50 postcards, at Tucker and Co we decided to invite the community for a postcard writing party. Gathering together with a common mission was not only more efficient but allowed us to connect with fellow neighbors over what we’re experiencing and how we dream of change. It was just an hour or so out of our evenings, but a purposeful time to share with each other (and our representatives in Congress) the things we care about. It has always been our goal at Tucker and Co to be a community hub, a place to gather, and feel safe and well nourished. Women Building Peace’s campaign is only an extension of our mission to build not just a cafe where all feel safe, but a country too.

If you’re living in Dillsburg, PA, your representatives are Congressman Scott Perry and Senators Dave McCormick and John Fettermen. Whether you have time to write personal postcards or simply a moment to leave a message at their office lines, each message does count. We may not get to see its impact directly, but in our country our representatives do have an obligation to listen to their constituents… but they can’t listen if we don’t say anything!
